Survival games alone are a to-do list. With friends they turn into stories: someone gets lost in the woods, someone forgets to feed the fire, someone takes on the boss with no armor. These eight are the ones that produce the most nights like that.

We picked them in October 2026 by crossing two things: the GameValio quality score and how many people were playing that month. They were good, and people were playing them.

How we picked

  • Quality of 75 or more on the GameValio index in October 2026, which blends Steam reviews with critic scores.
  • People actually playing. We looked at peak concurrent players from mid-September to mid-October 2026. A co-op survival game without a community loses half its appeal.
  • Real online co-op in a shared world. Games that are mostly PvP were left out.

Valheim

VikingsExplorationUp to 10 players

Valheim, exploring the Norse world. Official trailer, Steam.

You're a dead viking sent to a Norse purgatory, and you have to defeat bosses to prove yourself. In practice that means chopping trees, building a house the wind won't knock down, crossing the sea in a boat you made yourself and finding out the hard way what lives in the swamp.

It was the most played game on the list when we made it: in October 2026 it passed 250,000 concurrent players on Steam. It runs well on modest PCs despite looking great.

Between October 2025 and October 2026, the lowest Steam price was $9.99, in December 2025. Worth waiting for a sale.

Terraria

Terraria, a boss fight. Official trailer, Steam.

It looks like 2D Minecraft and is much more than that: over 5,000 items, dozens of bosses and a progression that takes your group from the caves down to hell and then up to space. Everyone ends up specializing in something.

It came out in 2011 and kept getting updates for more than a decade. It runs on anything.

Between October 2025 and October 2026, the lowest Steam price was $4.99, in December 2025. Half-price sales have happened, so wait. Resellers went lower in the same period.

Don't Starve Together

Don't Starve Together. Official trailer, Steam.

The hardest game here. Hunger, cold, darkness and sanity all come for you at once, and winter arrives before you're ready. The spooky storybook art is a trick: the game is cruel and you will die a lot.

Each character has their own ability, and the group works best when everyone plays their role.

Between October 2025 and October 2026, the lowest Steam price was $1.49, in June 2026. On sale, it's one of the best buys on this list. Resellers went lower in the same period.

Core Keeper

Core Keeper. Official trailer, Steam.

Top-down, you and your friends wake up in a giant cave and have to dig, farm, fish and take on huge bosses. It mixes the calm of Stardew Valley with Terraria's progression.

The most relaxed game on the list, and the best one for groups that mix heavy players with casual ones.

Between October 2025 and October 2026, the lowest Steam price was $11.99, in December 2025. Half-price sales have happened, so wait. Resellers went lower in the same period.

The Forest

The Forest. Official trailer, Steam.

Your plane crashes on a peninsula full of cannibals. You build by day and hide at night. The fear comes from enemies that watch your group from a distance before attacking, and from the caves nobody wants to enter first.

The sequel, Sons of the Forest, looks better, but this one reviewed much higher on our index in October 2026.

Between October 2025 and October 2026, the lowest Steam price was $4.19, in October 2026. Worth waiting for the next big sale.

Grounded

Grounded. Official trailer, Steam.

You've been shrunk to the size of an ant and have to survive in a suburban backyard. A dewdrop becomes drinking water, a leaf becomes a wall and a spider becomes the scariest monster you've ever seen. There's even an arachnophobia mode.

It's from Obsidian, and the campaign has an actual story, which is rare for the genre.

Between October 2025 and October 2026, the lowest Steam price was $19.99, in November 2025. Half-price sales have happened, so wait.

Green Hell

JungleRealistic survivalUp to 4 players

Green Hell. Official trailer, Steam.

Amazon survival taken seriously: leeches, parasites, broken bones, dehydration and a mind that starts to slip. You inspect your own body for wounds and need to know which plant feeds you and which one kills you.

In a group the difficulty gets bearable and the deaths get funnier.

Between October 2025 and October 2026, the lowest Steam price was $2.49, in December 2025. Never pay full price.

Project Zomboid

ZombiesSimulationBig servers

Project Zomboid. Official trailer, Steam.

The line on the start screen says it all: "This is how you died." Project Zomboid doesn't care whether you survive, only how long you last. You need to eat, sleep, treat wounds, learn to cook and stay quiet, because every zombie is dangerous.

The deepest game on the list and the one that shines most on a busy server. In October 2026 it passed 80,000 concurrent players.

Between October 2025 and October 2026, the lowest Steam price was $13.39, in October 2025. Discounts are small, so waiting gets you little. Resellers went lower in the same period.

Just missed the cut

  • Enshrouded: survival with building and magic, up to 16 players. In October 2026 it was one of the most played games, but it reviewed lower than the eight above.
  • Raft: you start on a raft in the middle of the ocean and keep making it bigger. Great for duos.
  • Sons of the Forest: The Forest's sequel, prettier and more ambitious.

FAQ

What's the best survival game to play with friends on PC?

By our October 2026 criteria, Valheim: high quality, a huge community and co-op for up to 10 people. If you prefer 2D or have a weak PC, Terraria.

Which ones run on a low-end PC?

Terraria, Don't Starve Together, Core Keeper and Project Zomboid run on almost anything. Valheim is light for how it looks. The Forest, Grounded and Green Hell want a dedicated graphics card.

No. All of them let one friend host. A dedicated server only matters if your group wants the world online while the host isn't playing.

Are the prices on this page current?

Yes. Each game's price, discount and recommendation come from today's data. The words are ours; the numbers are live.
