Horror alone is scary. Horror with friends is scary and funny, sometimes in the same sentence. The best games in the genre know it: they use proximity voice chat so you hear your friend's scream fade down the hallway, or ghosts that listen when someone talks too loud.
Here are eight games for your Halloween night, from light and silly to genuinely frightening.
The list in 10 seconds

| R.E.P.O. | up to 6 | Medium, and very funny |

How we picked
- Co-op online as the point, not an extra mode. Asymmetric games where one player hunts the rest, like Dead by Daylight, were left out.
- Quality of 73 or more on the GameValio index in October 2026, and people playing that month.
- A range of prices. When we made the list, half of it cost $10 or less on Steam at full price.
Valve's 2009 classic is still the best zombie co-op ever made. Four survivors push through campaigns packed with hordes, and an invisible "director" adjusts enemies and items to how your group plays, so no two runs match.
The Steam Workshop holds thousands of community campaigns. It's the most approachable game here and runs on any PC.
Between October 2025 and October 2026, the lowest Steam price was $1.99, in March 2026. Never pay full price.
Ghost hunting with real gear: thermometer, camera, spirit box, a book for the ghost to write in. Your group has to figure out what kind of ghost haunts the house before it decides to hunt someone. And the game listens to your mic: saying the ghost's name out loud is a terrible idea.
The one that's genuinely scariest on this list, especially in the first few hours.
It went on sale nine times in twelve months, always at 25% to 30% off. Steam's big seasonal sales are the time to buy.
You work for "the Company" and have to haul scrap off abandoned moons to make quota. The trouble is whatever lives inside the buildings. Proximity voice chat does half the work: when a friend disappears into the dark, you hear all of it.
One person made it, and it blew up in 2023. The funniest game on the list, even when it's scary.
It had three sales in twelve months, the deepest at 35%, in May 2026. The price is already low, so waiting gets you little.
Like Lethal Company, but with physics: you're robots hauling valuable, fragile objects out of haunted mansions. An expensive vase takes three people and a lot of coordination, and a monster showing up mid-hallway ruins everything.
It takes up to six players and was one of the most played games on Steam in 2025.
Between October 2025 and October 2026, the lowest Steam price was $6.49, in November 2025. Discounts are small, so waiting gets you little.
Cold War experiments where you and your friends are the test subjects. No weapons: the group hides, distracts and runs from grotesque enemies while completing sadistic trials. The heaviest game on the list, with graphic violence.
Between October 2025 and October 2026, the lowest Steam price was $3.99, in October 2026. Worth waiting for the next big sale.
Parkour through a city overrun by zombies. By day you run across rooftops and fight with whatever you find. At night, fast creatures come out to hunt anyone still on the street, and the game turns into real horror.
The whole campaign works in co-op, and it's much better that way.
Between October 2025 and October 2026, the lowest Steam price was $2.49, in March 2026. On sale, it's one of the best buys on this list.
Four prisoners in an underground complex full of creatures that sleep and wake at any noise. It's all planning: who keeps watch, who carries ammo, who opens the next door. One mistake usually costs the whole mission.
Made for set groups that like a challenge. With strangers it barely works.
Between October 2025 and October 2026, the lowest Steam price was $10.79, in October 2026. Never pay full price. Resellers went lower in the same period.
A group of cultists has to stop a ritual gone wrong while the possessed cult leader hunts them through the house. Rounds are short and intense, and the difficulty rises as you get closer to the goal.
A great pick for a quick night, and one of the cheapest on the list.
Between October 2025 and October 2026, the lowest Steam price was $4.99, in November 2025. Half-price sales have happened, so wait. Resellers went lower in the same period.
Just missed the cut
- Content Warning: you film monsters to go viral. More comedy than horror, and very cheap.
- Killing Floor 2: waves of monsters and lots of shooting, for up to six players.
- Demonologist: close to Phasmophobia, with a more realistic look.
