We took every game that had a regular, undiscounted price on both the US and Brazilian Steam stores on the same day, October 17, 2026, and divided one by the other. The typical game cost R$3.13 in Brazil for every $1 it costs in the US. With the dollar at R$5.08 that day, that works out to a 38% discount just for living there.
The average hides two very different groups, though. Indies and mid-priced games follow Valve's regional price table. Big releases are priced much closer to the exchange rate, and a few go past it.

How we measured
- 10,229 games with a regular price in both stores on October 17, 2026. Anything on sale in either country was left out, so we never compare a discount to a full price.
- Only games priced at $4.99 or more. Below that, rounding skews the math.
- The exchange rate is the Central Bank of Brazil's PTAX selling rate on 10/16/2026: R$5.0826 per dollar.
- The ratio is the Brazilian price divided by the US price. At 5.08 the game costs the same in both countries. Anything lower is cheaper in Brazil.
The pricier the game, the smaller the gap
Up to about $50 the pattern is steady: Brazil pays roughly R$3 per dollar, about 40% less. Above that it jumps. Games priced at $60 and $70 cost a median R$4.15 and R$4.28 per dollar that day, and the regional discount falls to less than half.
The reason is who sets the price. Valve gives developers a table of suggested prices per country, and studios that don't want to think about it take the suggestion. That's why the most common Brazilian price for a $19.99 game is exactly R$59.99: 647 games sit on that pair. Large publishers tend to ignore the table and price each region themselves.

Regular prices on 10/17/2026. Steam regional prices change now and then, so some of these may have moved since.
Baldur's Gate 3 is the unusual one: a big game that followed the regional table. Call of Duty: Black Ops III goes the other way. At that day's exchange rate, R$329.90 is $64.91, more than the US price.
Who charges the most, and the least
Among publishers with at least eight games in the sample, the pattern is clear. Activision charges a median R$5.50 per dollar, above the exchange rate. Rockstar, Konami, Koei Tecmo and Deep Silver sit near R$5. Capcom and Bandai Namco are around R$4.50.
At the other end are studios charging under R$2 per dollar: Klei (Don't Starve, Oxygen Not Included), Double Fine (Psychonauts), Tripwire (Killing Floor) and Spike Chunsoft. For those, a Brazilian player pays less than half of what an American pays after conversion.
Can you buy from the Brazilian store?
Not legitimately, and it isn't worth trying. Steam sets a store region from your payment method and location, and its subscriber agreement forbids using a VPN or false details to buy in another region. Valve can restrict accounts that do it. Regional pricing exists because a $60 game is a much bigger share of a Brazilian salary, not as a loophole.
What you can do is buy smarter in your own region. Our data shows big releases are where official stores discount least and where authorized resellers and key marketplaces make the biggest difference. We break down the risks of each store type in Keyshop vs Steam.

FAQ
Why do some games cost almost the same in Brazil as in the US?
Because each publisher sets its own regional price. Valve suggests a table per country, but it isn't mandatory. Large publishers tend to price close to the exchange rate, especially $60 and $70 releases.
Do Brazilian Steam prices change when the dollar moves?
Not automatically. The regional price is fixed by the publisher and only changes when they update it. When the dollar rises, Brazil's advantage grows until the next revision.
Are the prices in the boxes on this page current?
Yes. The official-store versus cheapest-store rows update daily. The table and charts are a snapshot from October 17, 2026.
